ST. FOY ABBEY-CHURCH AND THE MEDIEVAL TREASURE OF GOLDSMITH ART

This major guided tour will lead the group through Conques history and art, from its Romanesque Abbey-church to the medieval Treasure of goldsmith art.

Come and listen the  1000 years old story of this jewel of architecture, built by the medieval workers. Your guide will unveil its secrets. Go on and discover a unique jewel in France, the famous medieval Treasure of goldsmith art and its rich collection of sacred objects, among which stays the world-known “Majesty” of St. Foy. Finish with the Museum Joseph-Fau where are exhibited remains of the cloister and Renaissance furniture.

Discover the architectural wonder of St. Foy abbey-church and the 124 figures that adorn its tympanum. Your guide will unveil all their mysteries. Raise your eyes towards a few hundred capitals and contemporary stained-glass windows... This tour is an essential visit to approach Conques and its thousand-year-old history.

THE UPPER-GALLERY (TRIBUNES) AND THE ROMANESQUE CAPITALS

This guided tour offers the exceptional chance to reach the upper-gallery or Tribunes of the church, close to the sculpted capitals and the stained-glass windows by Pierre Soulages. Your guide will unveil the skills of the medieval “image-making” artists who carved the capitals’ baskets with interlaced patterns, story-telling subjects, religious or secular themes... This up-high gallery offers one of a kind perspective on the Abbey-church architecture.

The stained-glass windows by Pierre Soulages

From the upper-gallery of the abbey-church, your guide invites you to approach, at close hand, Pierre Soulages' creative process for his 104 contemporary stained-glass windows inaugurated in 1994. While strolling through the gallery next to the glass windows with opalescent reflection, we will lead you towards the discovery of this unique glass technique where everything is rhythm and light…

The medieval village

Come and wander with us through the medieval village of Conques in a colourful presentation, its history, civil architecture and human activities while strolling along the streets and lanes. You guide will reveal the secrets of this village, once a fortified medieval town and nowadays classified among the most beautiful villages of France. This commented walk will make you travel through the centuries, from timber-framed houses to lauzes covered roofs, from bread ovens to chestnut driers called sécadou... Come and share with us the key events in the village history, hear the anecdotes that make the fame of this village.

THE MEDIEVAL TREASURE OF GOLDSMITH ART

The Treasure of Conques is composed of many reliquaries with the famous “Majesty” of St. Foy as its masterpiece, and unique example of reliquary statuary from the first millennium. This treasure stands as one of the five greatest medieval goldsmith's works of art in Europe and the sole in France to display so many elements from the High Middle Ages.

The Treasure is open every day, including on Sunday (closed on January, 1st and December, 25th). It is located in the South aisle of the cloister. Groups may visit the Treasure all year-round on an open tour without reservation.

  • April 1st to September 30th:  (am) 9:30 to 12:30 and (pm) 2:00-6:00 (sanitation measures related to the COVID-19 crisis)
  • October 1st to March 31st: (am) 10:00-12:30 and (pm) 2:00-5:30.

NIGHT TOUR OF THE CHURCH UPPER-GALLERY IN MUSIC

Wander by night in the upper-gallery of the church in music at close hand from the capitals and the stained-glass windows by Pierre Soulages. This tour is not guided. It is programmed for individuals or groups…  A memorable and exceptional visit.

  • HIGH SEASON PROPGRAM (May-early October) : Every evening from may to october at 21:30 (except during major concerts - irregular programming in October)

  • Fee/person: 6€ (access possible from 12 years old) – Accessibility: stairs - For safety reasons, access on your own to the upper-gallery is not allowed
    Time: about 30 min. – Entrance and ticket booth: Northern inside staircase at 21:30 – Payment: Cash

HIGH SEASON PROGRAM 2021

(sanitary measures) - Programmating starting on June 9, 2021 (due to curfew at 23:00)

  • 21:00: Presentation of the tympanum by friar Jean-Daniel (in French) or 18:30 during the Summer Music Festival
  • 21:30: Night tour of the upper-gallery of the church in music (May-early October): Discovery of the Romanesque capitals, the glass windows by Pierre Soulages under the light and pipe-organ show (Fee: 6€, access for public older than 12 years old). Except during the Music Festival of summer.
  • 22:15: Polychromy of the Tympanum - By night, the progressive revealing of the colours offer a revisited reading of the 12th century tympanum and its 124 sculpted figures. Composing the Last Judgment and depicting the celestial Court, the angels, the elected, the condemned and other devils come to life.

PARKING AREAS AND REGULATION

Are you coming to visit Conques in a group and arriving by touring coach?

Tourism Coach parking is not allowed anymore, on the village parking lots. Please park your tourism bus/coach on the parking La Rivière (2km from downtown). A passengers' drop zone is set on the parking L’Etoile (West entrance of the town) - 200 m or 5 min. by foot to downtown.
